Margaret Lutz (Siano) is a
teacher of rug hooking and the owner of Hook Nook, a
rug hooking supply business. She first began
the art of hooking rugs in 1967 as a student of the
renowned hooker, Alice Beatty who worked in
Plainfield, N.J. She hooked under Alice's
guidance for more than 17 years until Alice's death
in 1984.
She hooks rugs that have been commissioned by buyers and has
sold many of her rugs on a international basis. She teaches
classes in the art of rug hooking and dyeing at the Princeton, N.J.
YWCA, at the Spinnery in Branchburg, N.J., and also at the Lebanon,
N.J. and Newark, N.J. museums. She also teaches classes
sponsored by the Hunterdon County Adult Education division as well
as offering private lessons on an individual basis in her studio.
Her work has appeared in a "one
woman show" at the Princeton Medical Center featuring more than 40
of her rugs in 1994. Also in 1994, Hook Nook acquired the
entire collection of Lib Callaway rug designs and continues to add
patterns to update the collection.
One of the key changes
Margaret brought to this well known collection of designs was to offer them on linen, rug warp, and monks cloth as well as on the
traditional burlap.
In March of 1999, one of Margaret's
hooked rugs appeared on the front cover of the Warren Countywide
Sprint Telephone directory. Her room size rug,
"Marie Stoker" was on the cover of the March 2005 issue of the ATHA Newsletter.
Margaret was honored in being chosen to
judge the hooked rugs competing at the prestigious 2000 Philadelphia
Flower Show as well as judging the rugs for the publication
Celebrations in March 2002. She is also a well known author
for book, The Secrets of Finishing Hand Hooked Rugs, published by
the Stackpole Publishing Company.
Hook Nook and Margaret's studio is
located in her home at Forty-nine Samson Drive, Flemington, N.J.
